Clearing the Air: Collaborative Care Strategies for Chronic Rhinosinusitis With Nasal Polyps in Rural and Underserved Communities

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory disease of the paranasal sinuses that affects more than 10% of US adults. Although only about 25% of these patients have nasal polyps (CRSwNP), the condition carries a substantial burden of morbidity and impaired quality of life. In rural and underserved communities, limited resources and specialist shortages place much of the responsibility of management on primary care clinicians—an added challenge given the complexity of care. This four-part CME/CE series will review the symptoms and diagnostic criteria for CRSwNP, outline available and emerging biologic therapies, and summarize guideline recommendations for their use. It will also highlight team-based strategies to enhance multidisciplinary management and care coordination in rural and underserved settings.
