Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of clinicians in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Hospital Medicine, Neurology, Neurosurgey, Radiology and Advanced Practice Providers

Program Overview

This educational initiative provides a comprehensive analysis of Convulsive Status Epilepticus (CSE)Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus (NCSE), and Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES). Expert faculty evaluate seizure classification, frequency, pathophysiology, and long-term patient outcomes to optimize clinical diagnosis and management.

Key Focus Areas

Convulsive Status Epilepticus (CSE): An in-depth exploration of pathophysiology, diagnostic frameworks, and evidence-based treatment and monitoring strategies.

Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus (NCSE): A critical review of diagnostic complexities, the clinical necessity of timely intervention, and a comparative analysis of available EEG monitoring modalities.

Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES): A concluding discussion addressing the distinct diagnostic and therapeutic challenges presented by this non-epileptic condition.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

Video 1: A Glitch in the Matrix: Management of New Onset Seizures

  • Describe the key stages in the evaluation of patients with new onset seizures
  • Execute a time based, stepwise treatment approach in the management of patients with seizures
  • Identify high-risk features for repeat seizures in determining the need for initiating outpatient antiseizure medication

Video 2: Beyond Five Minutes: The Convulsive Crisis

  • Describe the pathophysiology of convulsive status epilepticus and how it informs its diagnosis and management
  • Execute a time based, stepwise treatment algorithm including appropriately dosed benzodiazepines with escalation to second line and third line medications
  • Identify patients at risk for ongoing seizures and initiate EEG monitoring

Video 3: Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus; Recognizing the Obvious and Not so Obvious

  • Define non-convulsive status epilepticus (NCSE)
  • Recognize the importance of appropriately treating convulsive seizures to decrease the risk of transitioning to NCSE
  • Identify patients at risk for ongoing seizures and initiate timely EEG monitoring

Video 4: Not Epileptic but Still Real; Understanding Psychogenic Seizures

  • Differentiate psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) from epileptic seizures using history and clinical findings
  • Describe psychosocial factors and common comorbidities associated with PNES
  • Apply strategies for managing PNES including the use of EEG monitoring, diagnosis delivery, medication discontinuation, and psychiatry referral to improve patient outcomes
