Target Audience

This activity is for osteopathic physicians and other health care professionals, including primary care/family medicine physicians, physician associates (PAs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and other specialties, including OB/GYN, nephrology, etc., who prescribe and/or participate in the treatment of patients taking mycophenolate products.

Program Overview

Prescribing mycophenolates comes with a responsibility that extends beyond the prescription pad. Despite clear risks, gaps in counseling and management continue to lead to preventable fetal exposure and harm. This activity will give you the tools to confidently navigate reproductive risk conversations, implement evidence-based pregnancy prevention strategies, and support informed patient decision-making. Participants will also learn how to clearly communicate teratogenic risks, select appropriate contraceptive approaches, and identify safer therapeutic alternatives when needed. You’ll also gain practical guidance on REMS requirements, including pregnancy reporting and engaging patients in the Mycophenolate Pregnancy Registry.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Recognize the increased risks of first trimester pregnancy loss and congenital malformations associated with mycophenolate use
  • Explain the risks of mycophenolate exposure during pregnancy to patients
  • Demonstrate effective patient education on pregnancy prevention, including appropriate contraceptive methods during treatment
  • Identify alternative immunosuppressive therapies with lower embryofetal risk for use in pregnancy or preconception planning
  • Describe the process for reporting pregnancies to the Mycophenolate Pregnancy Registry per REMS requirements
  • Review approaches to encourage patient participation in the registry to contribute to safety monitoring and research
