Program Overview
Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that extends far beyond its hallmark motor symptoms. Psychiatric complications, including depression, anxiety, and psychosis, add significant challenges for both patients and caregivers. Despite the availability of validated screening tools, Parkinson's disease psychosis (PDP) often goes unrecognized or is diagnosed late, delaying appropriate care.
In this expert-led activity, a neurologist, psychiatrist, and neurology NP/PA will explore practical strategies to improve timely and accurate identification of PDP. This discussion will cover the latest safety and efficacy data for approved therapies, the continues reliance on off-label antipsychotics despite their risks, and how to determine which patients are best suited for pharmacologic intervention. A caregivers video vignette will further illustrate the real-world burden of PDP and the importance of thoughtful, patient-centered treatment.
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Describe how to use available screening tools to facilitate the timely diagnosis of PDP
- Discuss the safety and efficacy data supporting the use of available therapies for PDP
- Identify patients with PDP who would benefit from available therapeutic options
