Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for those with an American Thoracic Society professional membership as well as other pulmonary specialists, including physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician associates; the secondary audience will be other health care professionals involved in the management of patients with MA-PAH, including addiction medicine specialists.
Program Overview
This program addresses the lack of awareness of methamphetamine associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (METH-PAH), including its epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and known pathophysiology; improving early detection, screening, and diagnosis of METH-PAH; and integrating approaches to the treatment of METH-PAH that seek to address both the PAH and underlying substance use disorder.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:
- Describe the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of methamphetamine-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (MA-PAH)
- Explain the current understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms linking methamphetamine use to PAH development
- Identify key screening and diagnostic approaches for early detection of PAH in methamphetamine users
- Summarize a comprehensive approach to the treatment of MA-PAH that seeks to integrate pharmacotherapy for PAH and substance use disorder management
