Program Overview
Biologic therapies targeting IgE, IL-5, IL-4Rα, and TSLP have reshaped the landscape for severe asthma, allowing for personalized, phenotype-driven care. These agents offer options for patients who remain symptomatic despite maximal inhaled therapy. Several biologics are currently approved, with dupilumab and tezepelumab among the most recent additions. This expanded toolkit offers flexibility in treatment selections, yet it can also make decisions more complicated for asthma specialists and primary care providers alike.
Primary care physicians are central to early diagnosis, education, and stepwise guideline-based management. Despite this role, primary care physicians often overestimate asthma control, underuse validated tools, and referrals for advanced therapy may be delayed or missed. When asthma remains uncontrolled, timely referral to specialists is vital. Co-management models facilitate the referral process. For example, the UBIOPRED initiative in Europe established shared protocols for biomarker-driven care across primary and specialty settings. These approaches reduce delays in therapy escalation and support individualized treatment and continuity of care.
Given the ongoing challenges in asthma management and the expanding treatment landscape, connecting asthma experts with primary care providers through structured, collaborative education is essential. This curriculum is intended for primary care physicians and will support them in identifying uncontrolled asthma, applying validated assessment tools, and recognizing when to escalate therapy or refer patients for specialist evaluation and co-management.
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:
- IDENTIFY key clinical indicators of uncontrolled asthma and determine when escalation of therapy and referral to a specialist is warranted
- UTILIZE validated assessment tools and relevant biomarkers to evaluate asthma control and inform treatment decisions in primary care settings

Dr. Karla Adams is a Professor of Pediatrics and a practicing Allergist in San Antonio, Texas. She obtained her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University then completed a Pediatrics residency and Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium in San Antonio, TX. She is currently the Program Director for the Allergy and Immunology Fellowship at Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center, San Antonio, TX.

Dr. Puneet Shroff is a board-certified Allergist & Immunologist who joined the University of Arizona in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine in 2018. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Shroff came to Tucson after having built a thriving Allergy & Immunology practice in Houston from 2012 to 2018. He has a keen clinical acumen and a deep understanding of allergy clinic workflow, including allergy testing and immunotherapy. During his time in Houston, Dr. Shroff also served on the Board of the Greater Houston Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Society.
Dr. Shroff received his Doctor of Medicine in Chicago, IL and then completed residency in Internal Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis. He then trained at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX where he completed a dual fellowship in Allergy & Immunology and Rheumatology and served as Chief Fellow. Dr. Shroff has studied internationally, including the University of Oxford, and he is a Certified Instructor in Yoga, including asana and pranayama (breathing) practices. He also has additional training in Integrative Medicine through the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine founded by Dr. Andrew Weill.
