This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of providers in primary care, pediatrics, endocrinology, rheumatology, neurology, nephrology, orthopedic surgery, emergency medicine, urgent care, geriatrics, and genetics.

Program Overview

Tumor induced osteomalacia (TIO) and X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) are two FGF23 mediated skeletal disorders. TIO occurs mostly in adults. XLH presents in early childhood. In both disorders, hypophosphatemia is a cardinal sign, and serum phosphate should be measured as the initial test. In this activity, when to raise suspicion and how to diagnose TIO and XLH will be discussed. Treatment approaches and the role of FGF23 inhibitors will be addressed.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Identify mechanisms and clinical features of TIO and XLH, along with the initial test to be conducted.
  • Outline steps in diagnosing TIO and XLH, while recognizing common misdiagnoses and differentials.
  • Develop plans to incorporate FGF23 targeted therapy into the care of patients with TIO and XLH.
