Target Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of clinicians in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Hospital Medicine and Advanced Practice Providers.

Program Overview

The educational subject matter is delivered in 3 independently accredited, short video segments. Participants participating in these educational programs will gain insights into:

  • Recognizing early cognitive and neuropsychiatric changes
  • Applying validated diagnostic tools
  • Managing overt HE episodes and implementing care plans to reduce OHE episodes/rehospitalizations
  • Understanding current evidence surrounding ammonia, neurotransmission, and metabolic factors
  • Utilizing care pathways across ED, inpatient, and outpatient settings

Learning Objectives

Video 1: Definition, Causes and Clinical Presentation: 

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: 

  • Emergency Department Practitioners will more effectively identify hepatic encephalopathy as the underlying cause of altered mental status.
  • Upon confirming a diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy, Emergency Department Practitioners will select the appropriate therapeutic strategy according to widely accepted clinical practice guidelines.

Video 2: Hepatic Encephalopathy in the Emergency Department: 

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: 

  • Engage appropriate resources ensuring HE patients discharged from the ED/Hospital, will have the resources and support systems to appropriately manage their liver disease and subsequently reduce rehospitalizations.
  • Effectively utilize the ACEP Point of Care ALTERD tool approach to better manage OHE patients in the ED.

Video 3: Transitions of Care and Future Directions

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to: 

  • Create and communicate effective care plans for HE patients being discharged from the ED/Hospital.
  • Develop prevention strategies that incorporate technology and pharmacologic intervention to reduce HE episodes.
