Target Audience

The intended audience for this activity is primary care physicians, endocrinologists, pediatricians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and dietitians involved in the management of patients with overweight and obesity.

Program Overview

Obesity is a rapidly escalating public health challenge in the United States, affecting millions and contributing to various serious health complications such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and sleep apnea. Despite its widespread impact, healthcare professionals often fail to recognize obesity as a chronic disease and lack the knowledge to implement guideline recommendations effectively. This knowledge gap extends to the integration of current therapies into comprehensive management plans for patients with obesity, leading to underdiagnosis and undertreatment of the condition. Consequently, an interprofessional approach to obesity management, although necessary, is rarely employed, resulting in suboptimal patient care and outcomes.

The activity begins with the patient encounter and the experiences in working with clinicians, as well as a moderated discussion of real-world perspectives. Pharmacological management is investigated, including guideline-driven recommendations as well as a review of the safety and efficacy of obesity medications, including management of potential adverse effects. Management of obesity in pediatric and adolescent patients is also discussed, emphasizing the burden of obesity on the younger population. Faculty then explore practical strategies for engaging patients in empathetic, non-stigmatizing conversations about obesity as a treatable chronic disease. Finally, they review the benefits and risks of bariatric surgery, including combination therapy and managing post-surgical weight gain.

Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  1. Recognize obesity as a chronic disease associated with several serious comorbidities.
  2. Implement current guideline recommendations for diagnosis and management of patients with obesity.
  3. Manage children and adolescents with obesity in accordance with pediatric guidelines.
  4. Integrate current therapies into comprehensive management plans for patients with obesity.
  5. Discuss obesity management with patients to improve patient-provider communication.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of surgical treatments for obesity, including ways to mitigate post-surgical weight gain.
  7. Employ patient-centered approaches, such as shared decision-making and interprofessional strategies, to improve the care of patients with obesity.
