Target Audience
This activity has been designed to address the educational needs of primary care clinicians and resident/fellows in family medicine. The initiative also may be of benefit to physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals who are involved in family planning.
Program Overview
Clinical training and preparation are integral to supporting IUDs as a successful option for reproductive autonomy. Join Drs. Prager and Turok for a brief didactic presentation reviewing medical eligibility criteria and indications for IUDs—birth control and emergency contraception—in addition to pain management approaches during and after IUD insertion. The faculty then demonstrate best practice techniques for optimal IUD insertion.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Explain the benefits and risks of intrauterine devices (IUDs) as a contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy, including adolescent and postpartum patients
- Apply best practices for proper IUD insertion and removal for eligible patients
- Devise a patient communication plan including education on IUD selection, insertion, and pain management
