Target Audience
A national audience of obstetricians, gynecologists, primary care physicians, advanced practice providers (NPs and PAs), and other healthcare providers who manage patients with menopausal symptoms.
Program Overview
In this interactive, case-based, 60-minute activity, Genevieve Neal-Perry, MD, PhD, and Anita L. Nelson, MD, share their real-world experience in recognizing and treating women with vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. Until recently, treatment has been symptomatic, utilizing a wide variety of non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic approaches; however, few are recommended. Drs. Neal-Perry and Nelson discuss these options, as well as the recent approval of targeted therapy based on advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of hot flashes.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Describe the symptoms associated with menopause and their effects on quality of life.
- Appreciate how culture, ethnicity, sexuality, religion, and misconceptions may affect perception and treatment of menopausal symptoms.
- Compare the benefits and risks associated with guideline-recommended pharmacologic treatment of women with menopausal symptoms.
- Discuss the latest advances for the treatment of women with menopausal symptoms.
- Utilize shared decision-making strategies to employ a quality-of-life improvement plan for patients with menopausal symptoms.
