Program Overview
Patients with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and some patients with type 2 diabetes require daily administration of exogenous insulin to maintain blood-glucose levels within the normal range both pre‐ and post‐prandially. There are a wide variety of insulin products, delivery methods, and monitoring devices to help people achieve these goals. To develop an optimal, individualized management strategy and to adjust treatment regimens based on continuous glucose monitoring, clinicians need to understand the spectrum of insulins available, including their efficacy, safety, indications, and usage parameters.
Join a panel of experts, including a moderator from Joslin Diabetes Center and two clinicians with expertise in diabetes, to review the indications for and role of exogenous prandial insulin treatment to achieve glucose control in people with T1DM and others requiring insulin-replacement therapy. Clinicians will learn to interpret results from a continuous glucose monitor and use them to determine and titrate insulin‐replacement programs. Panelists will also share strategies to encourage shared decision‐making and provide patient education, motivation, and access to diabetes self‐management support.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the indications for and role of exogenous prandial insulin treatment in maintaining glucose control in people with T1DM and others requiring physiologic insulin‐ replacement therapy
- Interpret the results from a continuous glucose monitor and use those results to determine and titrate insulin‐ replacement programs
- Select strategies for shared decision‐making to select insulin types, treatment designs, and use of continuous glucose monitoring technology with patients who require insulin therapy
