Target Audience
The educational design of this activity addresses the needs of allergists/immunologists, pediatricians, and primary care clinicians (MDs/DOs/NPs/PAs).
Program Overview
Food allergies pose a major health burden on patients, their caregivers, and the healthcare system. Oral immunotherapy (OIT) has shown efficacy raising the threshold of tolerance for certain foods, but it is limited by burdensome regimens, risks of allergic reactions, and the fact that it often targets only one food allergen. An improved understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and role of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in food allergies has led to advances in management.
Join an expert panel of allergy and immunology specialists to review the limitations associated with current approaches to reduce risk of allergic and anaphylactic reactions in people with food allergies. Panelists will discuss current guidelines to manage food allergies in adults and children, as well as newer biologic agents that inhibit mediators of the allergic pathway. Learn how these advances in treatment may allow patients to achieve tolerance to higher amounts of multiple allergens, enhance convenience and adherence, and improve quality of life for patients.
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Recognize the limitations and challenges associated with traditional treatment approaches, including oral immunotherapy (OIT), for desensitization and improvement of tolerance to known food allergens
- Apply current evidence-based consensus recommendations for managing food allergies
- Describe current evidence supporting the efficacy and safety of emerging biologics that target the underlying pathophysiology of food allergies and common comorbidities
