Program Overview
The introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for advanced and metastatic forms of non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) has changed management, adding both opportunities and challenges. In this activity, nurses will gain a practical understanding of the role of ICIs in NMSC management, including how they work, how to communicate safety and efficacy expectations to patients, safe administration and handling practices, how to recognize and characterize immune-related adverse events (irAEs), including why irAEs happen, and how to differentiate life-threatening irAEs from common side effects.
Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Counsel patients with advanced/metastatic non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) on the benefits and safety of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs)
- Mitigate potential immune-related adverse events associated with ICI use in patients with NMSC
