Target Audience
The audience for this educational initiative is nurses, advanced practice providers, and other health professionals who care for people with epilepsy.
Program Overview
Every person living with epilepsy should have a seizure action plan. Every person with epilepsy should also know about seizure rescue therapies. Improving care for people with epilepsy starts with a conversation about seizure action plans and rescue therapies.
In this activity, celebrity advocate Jack Coleman (“Dynasty”, “Heroes”, “The Office”) introduces adults with epilepsy and care partners who talk about the impact of seizure action plans and rescue therapies. Epilepsy nurse specialists explore new rescue therapy options that can be given by patients and care partners to treat seizures and prevent seizure emergencies. These specialists share practical tips for creating shared understanding, individualizing seizure action plans, and educating about rescue therapies. Downloadable resource handouts for health professionals and patients/care partners are provided.
Learning Goal/Purpose
The goal of this educational activity is to enhance the knowledge, competence, and confidence that nurses need to successfully individualize seizure rescue therapy for people with epilepsy and their care partners.
Learning Objectives
On completion of this activity, the learner will be better able to:
- Specify the unmet needs of adults and adolescents living with epilepsy and their implications for rescue therapy
- Individualize rescue therapy based on each person’s medical needs, preferences, and lifestyle
- Employ practical communication and education strategies that support the safe and effective use of rescue therapies
