From Theory to Practice: An Update on RCC, CML, and Bone Metastases

A CME/CE Certified Expert Commentary Webcast

Significant changes in the oncology therapeutic landscape have occurred due to advances in our understanding of tumor biology. For patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the past decade has seen the approval of 3 vascular endothelial growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors, two mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitors, and an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor monoclonal antibody. The introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors over the past decade has transformed the outlook for patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) both in the first-line setting and in those with imatinib-resistant/intolerant CML. Additionally, bone health is a fundamental issue that needs to be addressed in patients with cancer. Advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology of bone metastasis and treatment-induced bone loss have led to the development of targeted therapeutic approaches to their management and prevention.

Health care providers involved in the management of patients with cancer are confronted with the challenges of staying abreast of emerging data on targeted therapies and applying evidenced-based approaches to improve patient outcomes. Addressing these challenges, this educational activity will discuss key concepts regarding the use of targeted therapies in patients with advanced RCC, CML, and in the management of bone metastasis and treatment-induced bone loss in patients with breast cancer.
