Planning for Success in Hepatitis C: Sustained Virologic Response and Optimal Patient Adherence

The Validation ModelSM

The Validation ModelSM is a new four-part series that seeks to enhance communication between patients and their health care providers. Patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection will be surveyed twice throughout the series to obtain a better understanding of their perspective about their disease and treatment experience. This important survey information will enable health care professionals to address their patients’ greatest concerns about their disease and ultimately lead to improved patient care. The Patient or KNOW Patient is the third part in the series.

HCV infection places a significant burden on the individual and society. The current standard of care for patients with HCV infection consists of pegylated interferon (peg-IFN) + ribavirin (RBV), with the goal of achieving a sustained virologic response (SVR). SVR is associated with durable responses and improved outcomes by preventing the morbidity and mortality associated with disease progression, and HCV infection is now considered a potentially curable disease. Novel agents such as direct-acting antivirals, which target the HCV replication cycle, are in various stages of development. Protease inhibitors are in advanced stages of development. Clinical trial data have shown that SVR rates can be improved in both treatment-naive and treatment-experienced patients with the use of treatment regimens incorporating protease inhibitors + peg-IFN + RBV. We are now at an exciting crossroad in the management of HCV, as the treatment paradigm of HCV infection may change in the near future. This educational activity will discuss the efficacy, management of adverse events, and breakthrough issues associated with protease inhibitor-based combination therapy. Patients’ views regarding their HCV infection and treatment will be incorporated into the activity. This patient perspective will enhance communication between health care providers and patients.
